Opalescence – How it Works?
The Opalescence gel contains active penetrative cleansers like potassium nitrate, fluoride, etc. It works from inside out by dissolving the stains and discolorations from the deep layers of the teeth. Kits including trays and the whitening gel are available for carrying out teeth whitening. As the blemishes may be present at different layers of the teeth, multiple treatments with teeth whitening kit opalescence may sometimes be required to get visible results.
The complete procedure involves different stages, each holding its own importance. The following are the stages and important points pertaining to them:
(a) Pre-Treatment. It’s important to note that the health of the teeth and gums needs to be ascertained before the application of the gel. Pregnant women and lactating mothers shouldn’t undergo the treatment. Color spectrophotometer and digital photos are used to establish the initial shade of your teeth. It’s highly recommended that Sensodyne toothpaste be used twice a day for two weeks before commencing the whitening process.
(b) Treatment. The process can be carried out by following the simple instructions that are given in the kit. Take note that the treatment period depends upon whether you’re using it during day or night, which is decided by your teeth sensitivity and comfort. If you feel excessive sensitivity in the teeth, either reduce the treatment duration or give 1-2 days gap between consecutive sessions. If the sensitivity still persists, get your gel replaced by a lower concentration gel. The process is undertaken as given below:
- Load the gel in the tray using a little over a third of one syringe.
- Place the tray in position and adjust the ends to fix in place.
- Clean extra gel that may come out of the tray. Use soft tissue or toothbrush for the same.
- Remove after treatment period as mentioned in the instructions.
(c) Post-Treatment. Clean the tray with cool water and toothbrush and store in the case. The remaining gel may be stored in the refrigerator (don’t freeze) to maintain shelf life (around 24 months). Visit your dentist for an overall evaluation. You’re ready to impress the world with your sparkling smile. Depending upon your oral hygiene and habits, it’ll normally last 1-2 years.
Teeth whitening using opalescence kit is generally 100% safe, but your dental health needs to be ascertained before starting the treatment. It’s the most popular whitening process due to its high success rate, but it works only on the natural teeth and not on the restorative fillings, crowns, etc. Hence, there may be a requirement to get these replaced to after the whitening is completed.
